Larry McMurtry grew up in a house devoid of books and 20 miles away from the nearest library. Despite this, he has become not only a successful author but an avid book collector as well. His collection began in the 1940s when his cousin, headed off to enlist, left McMurtry a set of 19 adventure stories. When McMurtry began his writing career some 20 years later, he was making a living as a book scout and book dealer. His passion for books led to the creation of his own book store in 1971 in Georgetown, Texas, which was followed by two others. Meanwhile, his personal collection continued to grow; today it holds 28,000 titles. In addition to sharing his life among books, McMurtry shares his personal history, anecdotes about the book trade, and his opinions on the decline of reading, the Internet, and chain book stores, among other book-related issues.
