$1.08 Billion
Arkansas Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Little Rock reported more than $1.08 billion in Arkansas premium in 2009, which was the second consecutive year it had more than $1 billion in premium.
9 of the top 10 health insurance companies reported collecting higher premium in 2009 than in 2008.
Increase Health insurance companies expect to receive more in premiums because of the health care reforms that Congress approved in March 2010.

Improvement for Hospitals in 2009
Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, which had a net loss of $20.5 million in 2008, reported in 2009 a net income of $12.4 million on patient revenue of $1.36 billion, which was the highest in Arkansas.

Positive swing in net income for St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock between its fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2009, and this year.
New Hospitals, Expansions
In July, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences unveiled its latest jewel in its massive campus overhaul project: a $130 million, 12-floor expansion of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. The 330,000-SF addition marks the second-largest completed construction job at UAMS' medical campus.
The Arkansas Children's Hospital South Wing is expected to open in mid-2012, expanding current inpatient capacity by 54 beds to a total of 370. The $121 million project will reach four stories and add 258,000 SF, including a new emergency room and expansions to the neonatal intensive care unit and the cardiovascular intensive care unit.

In the summer of 2010, NEA Baptist Health System started the infrastructure work on an approximately 700,000-SF building in Jonesboro that will house a hospital and medical offices. The cost to build and furnish the building is estimated at $300 million.

Drew Memorial Hospital is expected to start construction in early 2011 on a $21 million expansion that will include adding a 42-bed patient wing and surgery and obstetrics unit.

Regions Insurance Inc. reported writing $698.2 million worth of premium for property and casualty, which was the most in the state. It had a total of $883.8 million worth of premium written in 2009 and was the largest insurance agency in Arkansas.
